Skills for a Resume: How to Choose and Present Them

Choose specific, role-relevant technical and soft skills and support them with evidence in your projects and experience.

Short answer

Resume skills should be specific, relevant to the target role and honest. Group related skills, use the employer’s accurate terminology where it matches, and demonstrate important skills in project or experience bullets.

Technical skills

Name languages, frameworks, tools, methods or equipment you can actually use. Avoid rating bars: “Python, SQL, Git” is clearer than an unexplained 80% score.

Soft skills

Choose behaviours that matter to the role, then show evidence. Instead of listing “leadership” alone, describe how you coordinated a team project, resolved a constraint or documented a process.

Skill categories

Useful categories may include technical skills, programming languages, frameworks, tools, languages spoken and role-specific methods. Create custom categories when they help scanning.

Frequently asked questions

How many skills should I list?

List enough to show fit without becoming a keyword dump. A focused set of relevant skills is more credible than dozens of loosely related terms.

Should I rate skills with stars or percentages?

Usually no. These ratings lack a shared scale and graphical indicators may parse poorly.

Can I include skills I am learning?

Be transparent about your level and avoid presenting brief exposure as proficiency.
